for my daughter

in life
if you are abused,
and ill-used
know when to
walk away

to run away
-don’t be ashamed
& don’t look back
at some damn man
that only loves you
half as well
as he should.

love yourself
love your life
and if you don’t:
know how to fight
to live it right,
know when to fight
to live it right,
know where to fight
to live it right.

draw your line in the sand,
use a brick to crash glass-ceilings,
and remember that
the only power suit you ever need
is your own skin.
keep your dreams close,
tend them carefully;
only give them up for you
and not someone else.

the moon.

I wrote this years ago–probably about 10 or 15 years ago…for myself, with the title, “for a daughter, if I have one”…and I came across it while cleaning out some boxes of old stuff. I like it.
